Death by medication.

It's official at last. Champix is the final solution for smokers.

The doctors who finally worked this out now say that the drug should be used only as a last resort. Presumably that's the one after 'lethal injection'. The option 'leave smokers alone' is not on anyone's table.

They'd like to see it banned, they say, but know full well that the vicious, spite-filled filth of the antismoker industry will not allow it. To them, a dead smoker is an ex-smoker and that's all that matters.

In light of this knowledge, will doctors still prescribe it? Yes, they will. They will continue to deny any risk, or claim that the risk of maybe dying of smoking in old age is higher than the risk of sticking your head in a gas oven tomorrow. We're statistics. One more tick on the non-smoker list, and if they have to kill us to achieve it, they will. Just look into the dead, malign eyes of the Dreadful Arnott and see the hate in there. How do they get away with it? Hold David Cameron's or Nick Clegg's head up to the light and watch it shine through their ears.

Oh, I know there are antismokers salivating at the prospect of smokers driving off cliffs or lying on railway tracks. It's what that kind of mind thrives on. They'll grab themselves a case of beer and some hamburgers and settle down to watch.

They don't believe it will ever be their turn.

When it comes, they'll try to find a compromise. They'll give a little ground in the hope that will be enough.

Smokers tried that. Look at where we are now. One step from the gas chambers and there are plenty who will be willing to pull the lever. There can be no compromise.

But let them try. Let them find out for themselves. Let them suffer public humiliation, let them face ridicule and abuse, let them experience exclusion from public life, let them hear the latest healthy orders from their indoctrinated children, let them take the latest anti-drink or anti-fat or anti-salt pill that will kill them and then let them come to the smokers and say 'You've been through all this. Help us.'

Then we'll light one up and say 'No'.

Nice nod to Watchmen!

In BC they're handing Champix out for free along with useless gum and patches. While trying to ban the e-cig. They're not even trying to hide their corruption anymore!

This passage from the Mail article left me agog:

Britain’s drugs watchdog, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, said all medicines have side-effects and linking a reaction to a drug does not prove it was caused by the drug.

Does this apply to tobacco as well?

Antipholus - it's always good to see someone catch the references ;)

The cause/effect rule only applies where the drug-sellers want it to apply. So smoking causes dandruff because of a tenuous link involving around five test subjects, but a wide study of smokers treated with a pill and having psychological problems proves nothing.

That's modern medical science. Indistinguishable from shamanism.

We live in an ever increasing crazy world, the majority (the "herd") believing the fake science - that includes politicians.

The stupidity is overwhelming, meh, (in the eyes of the bansturbators / puritans) "Turn on, tune in, drop out" ;)

It's satisfy8ing to imagine them pleading to smokers to help them cope with denormalisation but it's doomed to remain a fantasy. They won't even realise that they're being denormalised and will embrace it all the while feeling superior because they're smart enough to keep up to speed with what's good/bad for their health (mind you, that does take some doing given that the rules change every five minutes).

"80 people die from this drug to stop smoking as opposed to 200,000 per year from smoking related diseases? Come on DM at least put things into perspective."

from the comments.Makes me weep.

If Champix is a factor in a suicide, it follows that when a suicide occurs with consequential economic loss e.g. person jumping on tracks and delaying trains, then the drug company should be liable for that consequent econmic loss.

Let's see if they are so keen to pick up the cost of the disbenefit.

I wouldn't touch Champix with a piece of 100ft gold plated piping. Before it came here it was used in the US and my friends their warned me of the dangers which were well known.

These were disregarded by the NHS and even when I tackled the rather pleasant wumman who runs the 'gie it up' club, she said she had to promote it. All part of her job you see. But, being an acquaintance, she told me privately she wouldn't recommend it to her own close friends and family.

Aye, we're expendable so we are.

The floating wifey has a good point I see.

"Chantix sales could help Pfizer on its comeback trail, as it tries to fill its impending, multibillion-dollar sales vacuum that will result from some of its older blockbusters losing patent protection.

This year, Pfizer's patent is expiring on Zoloft, the antidepressant with $3.3 billion in 2005 sales, and in 2007 it loses blood pressure treatment Norvasc, with $4.7 billion in 2005 sales. Also, the arthritis painkiller Bextra from the same drug class as Merck's (up $0.01 to $34.68, Research) beleaguered Vioxx, was pulled off the market in 2005 because of health risks, wiping out $1.3 billion in annual sales."

Smokers urged to keep taking pills...

"A LEADING health campaigner is urging people not to shun an anti-smoking “wonder drug” at the centre of a health probe."

Ailsa Rutter, director of Fresh — the campaign for a Smoke Free North East — said: “We are talking about a fairly unhealthy section of the population anyway . . . one in two will die because of smoking.

“The most important thing someone can do is stop smoking and Champix has proved to be very successful, so it would be a shame if some people were put off using it.”

2011

"Adverse event data from the third quarter of 2010 show the risks of serious psychiatric side effects of Chantix, the smoking-cessation drug, were previously underestimated because Pfizer apparently failed to correctly submit hundreds of these episodes to the FDA, according to an analysis by the Institute for Safe Medicine Practices, a non-profit that regulary reviews the FDA adverse event database.

Notably, the ISMP found 150 cases of completed suicides, some of which dated back to 2007, that were not reported promptly as suicides within 15 days as required.

Instead, the drugmaker apparently coded the suicides as “expected adverse events” among 26,000 such events, and added these to a quarterly periodic report, which is how less important, non-serious side effects are sent to the FDA."

Better a dead ex smoker than a live smoker

Leg-iron said...

Woodsy42 - that statement makes no sense. A live smoker can become an ex-smoker and still be alive, but a dead ex-smoker is out of options.

I nearly choked on my Regal reading that, so she does support eugenics!

Whereas with Champix its Ok to have folk depressed, having psychotic episodes, killing other people (this is a physical murder, not SHS-type so called murdering) or memory loss.

What a great defence to murder someone, - "she made me take it..."

These pharma-nipple sucking scum are unspeakable.
