Meat and mirth.

I'm going to need a lot of help laughing at this one.





Remember all that healthy eating advice? Stay away from red meat, live entirely on fish and chicken or you die?

Well...

HEALTH conscious women who eat mainly fish and chicken could be storing up as many problems as those who tuck into junk food.

It's no good. I have to have another dose.




So what's wrong with the fish and chicken diet? Haven't we all been told that red meat will kill us? Haven't we all been told it will make us all obese and cancerous?

Too little iron in both sorts of diet is to blame.

Oh dear oh dear. All those who listened to the healthy eating nuts are now anaemic and feeble. What to do?

Switching a few meals to foods high in iron, such as steak, liver and watercress could make all the difference. 

Uh-oh, here it comes again...




Yes indeed, health people, make those messages clear. So do we give up red meat as you wanted, and languish with anaemia, or do we just eat a bit of this and that, as humanity has done since it first dragged its scaly carcass out of the sea? How did we ever live without you? The answer, I think you'll find, is 'better'.

But - how can this be? Who, in this Righteous age, would have the temerity to claim that red meat can be in any way good for you?

The National Diet and Nutrition Survey, conducted by YouGov for industry body MeatMatters, found that a quarter of British women and teenage girls suffer from a low intake of iron. 

Aha, another pressure group. The Meat Men are fighting back with Righteous techniques of their own. As for the credibility of YouGov polling, I think Junican has some clues for us there.

Oh dear, I can barely type for laughing. All that hectoring and nagging about 'healthy eating' has turned the population anaemic. Well, the female half. Nobody seems to care about the male half - but that's not new. Now the burger bars can advertise the iron content of their burgers and entice the fish-and-chicken eaters back. Put some lettuce and cress on top and your State-sponsored anaemia will be cured in one meal.

From the health advisors that gave your children rickets, you can now add anaemia to their list of wondrous 'progessive' influence on your lives.

I mean, how can you not....




It's good to laugh. Even better when the Righteous are the ones being laughed at.

isn't it more that females tend towards anemia because of menstruation and that red meat rapidly repletes that loss whereas reuptake through iron rich vegetable foodstuffs isnt that effective or not as effective as eating red meat?
and, yes men wouldn't be so affected, obviously. your post makes me feel like i'm missing some significant point and i can't work out what it is.

The next problem is beef in the supermarkets has spent its entire life being injected and working out in the gym, it bears no resemblance to beef of yesteryear.
The tasty fat has gone, in fact the entire balance of flavour has dissappeared.

a consequence of over regulation, over farming, or greed? it, surely, can't be the cows fault ? unless  the cow has the duty to keep itself well fed and kept so to be slaughtered and enjoyed better when dead ?

eww, that puts me so off eating meat.

It's not that. I haven't done a pubmed search on iron-uptake by gender, but it has been mainstream for at least 20 years based on skeleton analysis by bone-kickers that historically, women tend to metabolize iron less well than males. Given the same diet and environment, the women end up dying of anaemia-related illnesses, and not just because of the obvious depleters, pregnancy and menstruation. 

The introduction of iron cooking pots in Anglo-Saxon Britain was literallly a life-saver.  The women finally managed to get enough iron through the cooking process to give themselves a fighting chance. It's a wonder they made it so far really, so let's hear it for the blacksmith bashing out iron cooking pots as he never got the recognition he deserved.

It might be all in the mind, but I swear I can feel myself getting stronger after a dinner of liver and bacon.

For added amusement, you could try convincing the health-conscious yummy mummies that the probelm can be solved by regular intake of Irn Bru - that I would like to see!

I always eat steaks, burgers, etc. only chicken now and then, and hardly ever fish.
No matter what we eat, we're gonna kick the bucket eventually, so who cares!

Yes, and how about low fat?  Do these people not understand the nutrition value of fat soluble vitamins?

The fatty meat is sold as the supermarket 'value' range. The more you pay, the less fat you get. Personally I like a good layer of fat on a roast, which means I pay less than those who like it very lean. This is a situation I am quite happy with ;)

The 'men' part was an aside. The main point was that all those years of telling us to eat fish and chicken (even to the extent of taking the skin off the chicken to get rid of the derisory layer of fat) has caused all these problems.

Those who caused it accept no blame - they act as though women have been on these diets through their own ideas.

I'm on stainless steel pots these days. I wonder if any iron leaches out of those?

If you add Vitamin D to Irn Bru it could probably cure most of the modern ills.

I doubt it's deliberate. I think it's more a case of some dope with a fad getting into far too important a job. Seems to happen a lot these days.
