Moatman.

The creature that appeared to have been a neanderthal throwback, Moatman, has been all over the news for shooting at people. How could he? Didn't he know the Righteous have banned guns? Therefore this cannot have happened.

Funnily enough, it happens all the more now that guns are banned. Oh, look, is that a gun-elephant in the room? Let's ignore him. And knife-elephant and heroin-elephant too. They are banned therefore they cannot exist. Aww, there's a baby smoke-elephant just creeping in with baby booze-elephant, baby fat-elephant, baby salt-elephant and baby cars-running-on-chip-oil-elephant. They'd be sweet, if they were real. Politicians must have very big rooms, and why not? We pay for them.

But I'm heading off on a tangent.

Moat's mother was quoted as saying 'he's better off dead'. That's not something you hear often. Usually when a gang member is knifed in the street it's always 'oh what a loss of a wonderful young person'. What a loss of a trolley collector at Tesco, more like. Yes, intelligent kids and those who show promise of a sparkling future are targeted by those whose foreheads produce waterfalls in the rain. It has been ever thus since socialism took hold. Most, though, turn out to be members of a rival gang. Not where you'd expect to find the next Einstein. More where you'd expect to find the next Reggie Kray.

Was Moat executed by the police, deliberately or accidentally? If he had his finger on the trigger, an electric shock would almost certainly make his finger muscles contract. The key is intent. Did those police fire their tazers expecting him to shoot himself, or were they trying to stop him shooting himself?

I suspect the latter. He had shot a colleague and they'd want him put away for a long time. I don't think they'd have wanted him to take the easy way out. Yes, easy way out. It's hard to get a real life sentence these days but a random shooting of a police officer would just about guarantee it. Even the dustiest-brained zombie in a wig would have to realise that if he turns on the police, his days on the bench are numbered. A few weeks of random-check stops and he'd get the idea.

The worst aspect of this whole sorry tale is the Facebook page that portrays a psychotic killer as some kind of hero. He was not Robin Hood. he just shot people and threatened to shoot more at random. Those laying flowers on the place where he died might, if he had not died, have joined the ranks of ghosts following him around. He was not fussy. If you were there when he felt like killing someone, you'd be dead.

Possibly it was his steroid addiction but he chose to take those steroids. He chose to turn himself into a caricature resembling Action Man, just as some deranged women have chosen to look like the anatomically bizarre Barbie. And yet the doctors would have delighted in him. He fits the twisted profile of human body shape that they have devised from intensive study of Marvel comics over many years. Whoops, digression again. I've been at the brandy tonight because I've been trying to sort my tax and it has a sort of wandery-brain effect on me.

Al-Jahom has a post on Moat's facebook 'fallen angel'' page. This angel fell a particularly long way and landed on spikes. It is no different to a Jack the Ripper Facebook page because he was so interested in the plight of Victorian prostitutes, or a tribute to Gary Glitter's work with children. It is sick and twisted.

Should it be banned? The Coagulation think so. I do not.

Free speech is free speech. There is no halfway. Either people can say things I find utterly disgusting or they cannot say anything without checking with me first. Free speech, however, is a two-edged sword. You cannot call me names without getting a response, and my response comes from being taught by someone well versed in twisting sarcasm into almost unrecognisable forms. Even now, I drop lines into conversation that nobody catches for some time afterwards. I once sent an Email to an ex-student with the line 'Parsley sage, rosemary and thyme?

At a subsequent meeting, she asked what that was about. I said I was asking if she would be at this very meeting.

It was in Scarborough. Obvious, surely?

Sometimes people just don't seem able to keep up. It's one of the reasons I stopped driving.

The Moatman 'Oh, he was a lovely boy, apart from the guns and the blood and the death' page disgusts me but I would never suggest it be banned or blocked. It shows what our country has become and I think the only reason the Cleggeron Coagulation want it gone is that it embarrasses them.

This is the country they have taken control of and they have no real idea how, and no real intention of trying, to fix it.

It's so much easier just to shut up the inconvenient.

Just like the last lot did.

The state of our educational establishment can be seen in some of those quiz shows that all channels seem to churn out. Some of the younger contestants struggle with ANYTHING other than modern current affairs, and that mostly of the 'celebritard' variety...

It shouldn't. They should point to it, and use it as an example of everything that's gone wrong with society, and reassure us that they have a plan to change it.

They won't. Because they haven't got one.

Interesting comment Julia, do you mean some sort of social engineering to mould people's thoughts and acts into a form you approve of? Or a cessation of social engineering to allow people to develop naturally into whatever?

Good post LI and I agree that they have the right to say it as we have right to our views and the right to say what we feel!

I mean neither, anonymous. Though the latter might seem superficially attractive, There will always be people like the ones lauding Moat, but the number could be cut quite drastically if we brought back consequences and shame.

Reminds me of the lovely Bill Hicks - "so, we lost an asshole" *shrug*

What did concern me during the Moat episode was the following (from the Telegraph).

"Despite Britain's biggest manhunt for a generation, involving at least 500 officers – 160 of them armed – 20 armoured cars, a police helicopter and an RAF Tornado jet, Moat managed to evaded capture for seven days."

"Moat's death brought to an end the biggest manhunt in recent British history. Police armed with Heckler & Koch G36 assault rifles, Glock 9mm pistols, MP5 Carbines, .223 Remington rifles, M24 sniper rifles and 50,000 volt electric Taser stun guns"

Oh, look, is that a gun-elephant in the room?

Rather large ones apparently.

The worst aspect of this whole sorry tale is the Facebook page that portrays a psychotic killer as some kind of hero.

The US portraying a psychotic killer as some sort of hero:

http://www.newsweek-interactive.com/2010/07/14/the-outsider.html?from=rss
"Good news for Tony Blair. The former prime minister recently learned that he’d won the 2010 National Constitution Center’s Liberty Medal (as well as a check for $100,0000), adding to a collection of U.S. gongs that includes the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal."

No wonder the common man and woman are confused. Which psychotic killers can we portray as heroes and which ones are unacceptable? No wonder people are confused when ethics and morals have become as twisted as this in society.

Nail on head hit, as usual, L-I. Don't ban these burblings from the shrunken frontal lobes of the Moatettes, learn something from them, O Leaders of the Our Nation. Moat was real, his fans are real. And righteous disapproval ain't gonna cut it.

Moat was not a good guy, we all can agree on that.

But you also totally miss the mark and fail to understand why his fans love him and why he is a legend.

The explanation 'they are morally deficient' doesn't quite help us here -- they love Moat because he demonstrated principles and morals -- and he stood up for himself to the bitter end.

Twisted those morals and principles are, but they are rooted in tradition (don't cheat on your man, don't take a jailed mans' woman and home, hate the cops). They are as old as the hills...

And in a strange way, it's encouraging to see that there is *some* remnant of the ability to have morals left, even if the outcome of it is totally fubared -- that's better than if they were totally void of any opinions or morals.

Ironically, Cameron's rageboy number on the tribute pages is only cementing Moat's legend... and shows up his lack of democratic principles and in the scheme of things, this deficiency of basic ethics in a PM is far more dangerous than Moat ever was.

The whole steroids thing is complete bollocks. I know plenty of people taking them (some who you even might say are addicted to them) and none of them do this kind of stuff. Pretty much all the side effects (especially "roid-rage") are vastly overstated. While the rage is exaggerated but still exists, there is no such thing as "roid-indecision" which causes a standoff with police that lasts hours, and there is no such thing as "roid-cunning" which compels someone to modify a shotgun shell to be non-fatal but cause a lot of pain and scarring.

I'm sure someone with big biceps will do something bad again soon, and then the highly scientific debate can be rekindled. Until then the anti-drug lobby will have to admit that Moat was just bonkers.

He said he was going to war with the Police. He probably hid in a drain, stole food and when push came to shove didn't wage anything like a war with the Police. Not much evidence of principles to me.

This article saying that he taped conversations as a matter of course and feared social services and the Police fitting him up make him sound like he had longstanding mental issues that needed addressing.

Has anyone seen mention of whether the gun Moat used was legally held or not? They were quick to point that out when Derek Bird went on his rampage amidst calls for tighter gun legislation..

There is also the Hunting-Elephant: hunting is banned, therefore nobody does it. It is strange how widespread this belief is among journalists.

No, these days, I'd say that made him a very, VERY prudent man indeed!

NOT taping conversations with government officials would be a sign of a lack of mental awareness of the current situation.

We'd been wondering when he would become a folk hero!

Free Speech is just that. Government 'knee-jerk' response - trying to shut down a facebook page just because it's 'not nice' - is a bit silly, and is the best way to irritate the underclass and foment rebellion. Do they want that?

naturalnoble said...

The gun wasn't legally held. People who have been out of prison for a few days after being sentenced for assault cannot legally hold guns and nobody can legally hold sawn off shotguns.

Another success story for gun control - this story was obviously imaginary because Rauol Moat cannot possibly have had a gun. Maybe that's why Cast Iron wants us to stop talking about it.

That's because you're applying *your* standard instead of looking at the standard that is being applied by Moat's fans.

He did what he said he is going to do, and that was sort out the Mrs. and her new man, and go to war with the police without compromise.

In Moat fan's eyes, he was making a stand where many of them don't have the balls to follow through, despite dreaming of this very thing.

And now that the meme is out there unchallenged and recommended by the PM as the best way of sticking two fingers up to the powers that be, expect many more such honour killings to occur.

Meh.

Serial killer Ted Bundy received love letters while he was waiting on Death Row. The fact that he was quite handsome meant that some women were prepared to turn a blind eye to the evidence that he was in many ways a less than ideal partner. The fact is that few people are more than just odd, they are 'goblins-in-the-dishwasher' weird.

Gareth 11:23 "Has anyone seen mention of whether the gun Moat used was legally held or not?"

You can't get a certificate for a shotgun with barrels shorter than 24". Moat's criminal record also meant he would have less than bugger-all chance of obtaining a licence even for a non-prohibited weapon. By and large the police are careful about this because they usually deal with the messy consequences of getting it wrong.

Naturally enough, it still hasn't stopped him being used as an argument for a tightening of the law on legally-owned firearms.

Capt Haddock -I just heard a Facebook employee on C4 News telling us that a page can only be taken down by The Creator. Clearly Cameron is even better connected that we thought.

Since I nominated him for eternal damnation on http://damned-to-hell.blogspot.com/ there don't seem to be any people voting to spare him!

What a surprise. I reckoned there would be a few dumb buggers out there - after all, there were over 3,000 on his memorial page. Unreal....

The Telegraph article that Snakey quoted:

"Police armed with Heckler & Koch G36 assault rifles, Glock 9mm pistols, MP5 Carbines, .223 Remington rifles, M24 sniper rifles and 50,000..." (line break)

It implies the continuation, "50,000 rounds of ammunition." If this wasn't deliberate, it's because the writer wasn't clever enough to think of it.
