WASH

World Action on Salt and Health.

It is not a pisstake. It is real. Or it is both.

In a recent New Scientist article, one of their drones derided all salt deniers as being in the pay of the salt industry. No imagination, these Righteous. They even struggle to come up with different names for their fake charities. Their methods are always exactly the same.

Their only aim in this case is the eradication of salt from the diet, which will kill even more people than the NHS have managed. Oh, it doesn't matter to them. It's not about health. None of it ever was. It's about getting people to do as they are told. Even if it kills them.

How many more single-issue sociopaths do we have to pay for, and when will the Cleggeron Coagulation even notice?

I have a nasty feeling that the answer is all, and never.

(Thanks to microdave for pointing this one out)

UPDATE - I planned to go into more detail, but Devil's Knife has already done so.

Oh well, at least the labelling of salt content on various foods will be a useful indicator in the supermarket as to which foods are liable to be totally bland and tasteless and thus worth avoiding - a bit like the indication of nicotine content on cigarettes is a handy guide when for one reason or another one's usual brand isn't available.

I can see any supermarkets supplied by producers who adopt this strategy changing their suppliers with great speed!

Wont be a favourite cause amongst the glorious U.A.F. one would imagine, as the acronym portrayed here, is their own greatest anathema.

Wasn't there an old episode of Star Trek when an alien extracted salt from people, causing their agonized death? But with salt now poison, the red-shirt extras should have leapt up, refreshed and thankful as the shape-shifting alien detoxifies the entire crew of the menace of salt and then shags the captain. As for WASH, a few months in the tropics with no salt tablets should do the trick.

On the site's sidebar there is a link to Consensus Action on Salt and Health or CASH - how appropriate.

"The modern salt saga started in 1904 with a paper by Ambard and Brochard who showed an association between salt intake and blood pressure in six patients.
On the basis of these observations they created a salt–blood pressure hypothesis.

"In the introduction of his 1960 paper Dahl defines his position, namely that salt is deleterious. Salt is compared with fall-out, carcinogens and atherogenic factors, and later in the paper with tobacco, alcohol, and fat"

How long before:

1) Salt is shown to be an addictive carcinogen
2) Medical interventions are identified for addressing salt addiction

WASH claim to be supported by voluntary contributions, but don't seem to have charity status. However another linked organisation, CASH, (good with names aren't they?) is registered. Their 2 biggest donors are the FSA (£23.5k) and the Botnar foundation, which just happens to be Nissan UK (£168k).

So, once again we have a government department effectively lobbying the government, but what does a car maker have to do with salt? Will new cars have a salt detector built in, immobilising the engine if you've just eaten a packet of crisps???

Leg-iron said...

I can't see what Nissan have to gain from this either, other than maybe freeing up salt to put on the roads, so their cars will rust faster and they'll sell more new ones.

Let them take all the salt out of food. I have stocks so I can just add it back in.

Although never add salt to a prawn curry. There is such a thing as 'too salty to eat!'

I wonder, when food is fat-free, salt-free and meat-free, what's actually left? Even vegetables have some fats and salt in them. All we'll be able to eat is wet fibre.

The WASH membership is a multicultural cross border, cross gender, cross ageist, collection of loonies who should be dealt with the Kenny Everett way.

Round them all up, put them in a field and BOMB THE BASTARDS!

"Overseas, proposals to cull dangerous levels of the so-called ''white death'' include mandatory caps in food, bans on the use of salt in restaurants and a ''salt tax'' on unhealthy foods, none of which are being considered here.

''The potential lives saved by reducing population-based salt intake is enormous,'' says Dr Timothy Armstrong, the World Health Organisation's co-ordinator of global salt reduction. ''I can't emphasise enough, apart from tobacco, this is a key risk factor for saving millions of lives a year.''

Professor Graham MacGregor, chairman of the London-based Consensus Action on Salt and Health, says Australia urgently needs a public awareness campaign to promote low-salt foods."

White death? Oh surely not.

Why are they targeting salt? It seems really stupid considering the amount of processed food we eat. We all know that processed food is high in hidden fats and salt. So, why not target processed food and the high earning companies which produce them? Why just salt????? It's odd and not a little strange, doncha think...?

A friend of mine has high blood pressure, a history of it...He also has a stressful job and a rather, er, stressful wife. He has been told to avoid salt in his diet. I've known him for over 10 years and yet despite avoiding salt in his diet, he still has high blood pressure.

I've observed his diet. He never uses salt directly on his food, in fact avoids it and yet, his favorite foods like bacon, ham and cheeses are high in nitrates and other chemical preservatives. Are these a consideration?

It's just odd how the righteous avoid looking at what they really should be looking at and yet focus on something natural that has been used safely for years...

OH FFS this really is too fucking much now, these people have to be dealt with!
Even if it's poisonous what the hell has it got to do with these cretins?

Slightly O/T, but I think you'll like this.

Just posted this link about a study from the University of Texas, finding heavy or moderate drinkers live longer than total abstainers over at Dick Puddlecotes. Pass it on.

Iodised salt for preventing iodine deficiency disorders
"Iodine deficiency causes mental retardation in children as well as enlarged thyroid glands (goitre) and deficiencies in thyroid hormones in people of all ages. It still exists in large parts of the world."
http://www2.cochrane.org/reviews/en/ab003204.html

"Universal salt iodisation (USI) and iodine supplementation are highly effective strategies for preventing and controlling iodine deficiency. USI is now implemented in nearly all countries worldwide, and two-thirds of the world's population is covered by iodised salt."
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20172466
But not for long.

Iodine deficiency disorders
"Serious iodine deficiency during pregnancy can result in stillbirth, spontaneous abortion, and congenital abnormalities such as cretinism, a grave, irreversible form of mental retardation that affects people living in iodine-deficient areas of Africa and Asia.

However, of far greater significance is IDD’s less visible, yet pervasive, mental impairment that reduces intellectual capacity at home, in school and at work.
The response: iodized salt

A spectacularly simple, universally effective, wildly attractive and incredibly cheap technical weapon – that's iodized salt!"
http://www.who.int/nutrition/topics/idd/en/
I don't think they mentioned that bit.

Rose - yes, the 'white death' will encourage a whole generation of zombies with goitre to deny the origins of 'salary'.

They don't teach history in schools any more. Well, unless it's socialist history.

Leg-iron said...

Fascist Hippy - there is much, much more to come. The police now call us 'civilians', did you know that? They are also encouraged to not see 'perpetrators' as human, did you know that?

I heard it from the lips of a newly-trained officer.

When it finally kicks off, it won't be just the smokers who are inhuman.

There will be blood.

Leg-iron said...

Bill - yes we live longer. But it might just be that we died years ago and were too drunk to notice ;)

Bill Sticker said...

Dead you say, Leg-Iron?

In that case I'm quite enjoying my afterlife. You must therefore be in that other place. Or a modest facsimile thereof.
