Because that, ultimately, is the intention of the census, is it not, these days? It would, for example, terrify them if there was a sudden, great upsurge in some obscure religion from the Far East that they hadn’t included and which they therefore didn’t know about. What? People worshipping in some way that they don’t know about (and so can’t target if they decide they dislike it or it’s getting too influential)? Can’t have that!
